The three American couples and two British couples featured in Breaking Conventions: Five Couples in Search of Marriage-Career Balance at the Turn of the Nineteenth Century were not alone in their efforts. Others of their contemporaries were equally adventurous in forming what we now call dual career marriages at a time when well-to-do white women were not expected to have careers, and not expected to marry if they did pursue a career.
